Literacy: The foundation for equity, a life time of greater opportunity, and thriving communities.

7 out 10 children in Monterey County are starting kindergarten as much as 2 years behind and most never catch up!  Please help them by donating to Read to Me Project – the only prevention-based, early-learning program that helps underserved children achieve kindergarten readiness and a lifetime of literacy by empowering school age brothers and sisters to read to their young family members at home.

Read to Me Project is honored to be included in this year’s Monterey County Gives! Campaign. Your donation will be matched now through midnight December 31 (New Years Eve!).  Every dollar goes toward the purchase of books to be used by participating students and program logistics that involves the coaching of those students 4th, 5th and 6th grade students to read aloud to their little siblings where they learn best, at home.

Why Support Read to Me Project?

Read to Me Project has grown from four participating classrooms since its launch  in 2011 to being implemented in 156 classrooms this school year with 1,940 students reading to more than 2,300 young family members. Currently there are approximately 400 low-literacy classrooms in Monterey County that could benefit by the Read to Me Project.

Did you know that 85% of the brain develops by the age of 5 years?

Every year 5,000 babies are born in the Salinas Valley. Seven out of ten (3,500) of those children every year are entering kindergarten lagging as much as two years behind in language, vocabulary and cognitive skills. Imagine a five year old starting school with the readiness level of a three year old.  Most children who start school behind, stay behind and struggle with literacy throughout their lives.

Read to Me Project is different because it is a sibling-to-sibling, prevention-based literacy program that is cost efficient, simple and directly impacts thousands of young children where they learn best, at home.

Read to Me Project is designed to break the generational cycle of low-literacy in Monterey County underserved households by engaging older siblings in their younger brother’s and sister’s learning and development. The Project provides year-long training and teacher supported classroom-based lending libraries of books to 4th, 5th and 6th grade students, to use to read aloud daily to their infant, toddler and preschool age siblings at home.

Please support the Read to Me Project. By donating by now through December 31st  a percentage of your giving will be matched.
