Program Coordinator/Bilingual Parent Educator

Children are the heart of the Read to Me Project, a prevention-based, innovative program that helps children achieve kindergarten readiness and a lifetime of literacy by empowering upper-elementary age brothers and sisters to read to their young siblings at home. In addition, we teach groups of parents why and how to build their children’s language and literacy, starting at the earliest age. The Read to Me Project vision is: Every child entering kindergarten prepared to succeed.
Position Summary: Currently serving under-resourced schools in Monterey County, we are seeking an individual to create a welcoming and engaging learning experience for students and parents. The position is both as Program Coordinator (approximately 70%) working with elementary students and as Bilingual Parent Educator (approximately 30%) working with parents.
The Program Coordinator position requires a highly organized individual to be a trainer and advocate with the ability to develop rapport and inspire program participation with students and teachers. The Program Coordinator is trained in delivering the established curriculum to the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students through classroom coaching presentations and small group check-in sessions. Coordinators are responsible for scheduling and coordinating the program at their assigned schools, overseeing student involvement, managing classroom data collection (e.g., enrollment and survey data), and generally taking responsibility for successful program outcomes in assigned classrooms.
The Bilingual Parent Educator position also requires a highly organized individual who will deliver early literacy parent education sessions in Spanish and English to both adult and teen parents, training will be provided. Educators work with the Program Director to schedule parent education series throughout the year that are held both in-person and online with potential for special projects to reach parents in new and innovative ways.
Teaching or presentation skills are essential for both roles. Most of the coordinator’s time will be spent at the school sites throughout Monterey County with the students or delivering parent education either on Zoom or in-person. Other administrative tasks can be done from home, with some travel to the Read to Me Project office (Salinas) required.
Responsibilities include and are not limited to:
- Manage and implement the program with great attention to detail, working with assigned classrooms and schools according to a specific timeline
- Create a friendly atmosphere for students and parents to learn
- Deliver coaching presentations to full classrooms and small groups of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students in the area of literacy and language development approximately twice a month
- Administer and manage student digital enrollment forms and end-of-year survey
- Regularly review student reading logs, identify and resolve any challenges teachers and/or students may have
- Prepare, deliver, maintain and inventory classroom book-bins, and train students to manage weekly book check in and out
- Assess participating students’ needs during small group sessions and problem-solve to increase student success rate
- Manage communications and administrative tasks
- Provide classroom teachers and administrators with clear, accurate and regular communications, including setting schedules for classroom presentations
- Collect and manage student program data
- Maintain regular communications with the Read to Me Project Program Director
- Plan, schedule and execute Read to Me Project events as assigned
- Participate in staff training sessions and team meetings (online or at our Salinas office)
- Deliver practical early literacy curriculum to teen and adult parents
- Occasionally assist other parent educators in managing online sessions

- Excellent written and oral communications skills
- Comfortable making presentations to whole classrooms as well as small groups of teachers, parents and students
- Creative problem solving and critical thinking: able to address and manage issues to achieve desired results
- Ability to trouble-shoot and problem-solve basic technology problems
- Fluent bilingual/bicultural English/Spanish
Also Required:
- Bachelor’s Degree (in education preferred but not required), or significant progress toward its achievement
- Proficiency in the use of technology, including Word, Excel, Outlook, G-Suite, and video conferencing (e.g., Zoom)
- Ability to travel to program sites throughout Monterey County
- Valid California Driver’s License and auto insurance
- Ability to lift 30-35 lbs.
- Fingerprints and Background checks: All personnel working in public schools with children must complete fingerprinting and a background check requirement. (Cost covered by Read to Me Project)
- TB Test: Required by all personnel working in schools. (Cost covered by Read to Me Project)
- Consistent access to the internet capable of reliable videoconferencing
Preferred, but not required:
- Personal computer for program implementation
Hours: While required to follow implementation timelines throughout the school year, August/September through June, and complete other tasks, Program Coordinators have significant flexibility in organizing their work hours. Work with elementary students is conducted during school hours, with parent education sessions occurring during both day and evening hours. Within Read to Me Project implementation timelines, each person’s individual work schedule will vary based on school and classroom needs, and the individual’s other time commitments.
